In the final analysis, I voted (absentee balloting) for Obama and not McCain because everything I have learned in 20 years of school, college and graduate school, everything I've experienced in this country and others, all the people I've talked to and books I've read, leads me to understand (not believe) that after 4 years of a John McCain administration, the United States will be in exactly the same place it is today. The same scientific and technological level, the same decrepit education system, the same means and methods of energy production, and same foreign policy, the same health care policy, the same economic policies, the same social viewpoints.

It won't be worse, it won't be better, it will be the same.

Perhaps to the elderly or nearly-elderly, to those that may not expect to survive the next administration, this is enough. To me, a young man with many decades of life to experience, this kind of stagnation is anathema. The policies of an Obama administration may not be successful. They may be wildly successful. But at the least, under an Obama administration, an attempt will be made to advance the state of the nation. That is what I voted for; I reject stagnation, and run towards even the faintest shadow of progress.
